초능력자(psychic)는, 형용사로서는 초정상적, 초자연적인 힘이나 요인을 가리킨다. 명사로서는, 영매 또는 초정상적 힘을 구비한 사람을 가리킨다.
제임스 랜디는 초능력이나 영적능력을 갖고 있다고 주장한 사람들을 테스트하고, 아래의 2가지를 발견하였다. １, 그들은 결코 대조 조건하에서 테스트를 받고 오지 않았다． ２, 자신이 초능력을 낼 수 없는 것을 어리석었던 변명으로 합리화할 것 하지 못하는 사람은, 왜 실패한 것인가에 대해서 자신도 알지 못한다. 초능력자 전부가 속임수 사기꾼과 말한 것이 아니다. 그들의 일부는 정말로 자신의 초능력을 믿고 있다. 그러나 지금까지 의미있는 방법으로 한번도 테스트 해보지 않았었다고 말하는 것뿐이다.
