1) 지질주상도 (Geologic Column)

지구상에서 소위 지질주상도 라는 지층 순서대로 지층이 쌓여있는 곳은 실제로는 없다.¹ 대륙의 대부분의 장소에서 지질주상도의 반 이상을 잃어버렸다. 지구 육지 표면의 단지 15-20% 정도만이 지질주상도 상의 지질시대의 1/3 정도를 연속적인 순서대로 가지고 있을 뿐이다.² 심지어 그랜드 캐년에 노출되어있는 지층들에서도 이 상상의 지질주상도에 있는 기간 중 1억5천만년을 잃어버렸다. 상상의 지질주상도를 사용해서 화석과 암석의 연대를 측정하는 것은 잘못되었다.) 출처

1. 한 곳에서 전체 지질주상도가 존재할 수 있다는 것을 부적절한 것이다. 지질주상도의 모든 부분들은 많은 장소에 존재하며 각각의 부분들이 겹쳐 존재하기 때문에 이러한 많은 부분으로부터 전체 주상도를 구성할 수 있다.
   
   지질 주상도가 끊겨져 있는 것은 오래된 지구역사와 잘 맞아떨어진다. 주상도는 오직 퇴적환경에서만 쌓이게 된다. 오랜 기간에 걸친 날씨와 지질학적 변화가 퇴적되는 지역과 침식되는 지역을 번갈아가면서 변화시킬 것으로 예상된다.
   
   
2. 모든 지질학적 시대의 지칭이 한 곳에 있는 지층이 실제로 있다. 예를들어 호주의 보나파르트 분지이다. [Trendall et al. 1990, 382, 396].
